DESIGN DICTIONARY: Pique Assiette

What is pique assiette?
PIQUE ASSIETTE:
A type of mosaic that is distinguished by its use of broken ceramics--such as dishes cups and tiles-- in the design.
Large Scale
Pique assiette used on a large scale has a mesmerizing effect. Antoni Gaudi and Josep Maria Jujol's Parc Guell is one of the most famous examples of the mosaic.
Maison Picassiette, in Chartres, France is another well known example of the mosaic. Back in the 1930's, Raymond Edouard Isadore covered his entire house, inside and out, plus his garden with broken ceramics. Now, it's a tourist attraction.
Smaller art objects
Broken ceramics are interesting medium for smaller objects as well.
DIYers take note: pique assiette is said to be a very manageable project. There are lots of You Tubes and project instructions found on the web (google"diy pique assiette").
