If you have been following the news out of this spring's High Point Market, you will have surely heard about Alexa Hampton's stunning rooms at the Hickory Chair Showroom.  Like her father before her, Alexa is one of the world's top interior designers.  As it turns out, Alexa, again like dad, is an accomplished artist.   She put that talent front and center this spring at High Point when she filled her spaces with art of her own creation.    While Mark Hampton is best known for his watercolor renderings of rooms,

Alexa was obviously exploring very different styles and mediums, showing both abstract art and realism.  I thought I would give you a closer look at the works of art she created. In her first room, Alexa explored contemporary genre, playing with  mixed media collage.   Here is a close up of the painting seen in the first photo showing corrugated cardboard, numbers, paper collage and slashes of paint.  From a distance the art work resembles a tree and reminds me both of Matisse's cut-outs and the mixed media collages of Robert Rauschenbeg that I blogged about here.

Here are a few more of Alexa's collages.  I think it is interesting that she incorporated a lot of Greek letters--an offhand reference to her classical style.

Alexa did a 180 with her art  in the next two rooms.   Her art in those rooms was very realistic and focused on classical imagery like the Roman Coliseum and Pantheon.

Her principal focus was on depicting architectural detail, making these pieces much more like her father's work.

Alexa told me that her art work will be available through Soicher- Marin sometime in 2015.  I think it will be interesting to see if she will continue to work in such opposing styles. Amazing talent in that family!
